The Ninth

At the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, the completely deaf Beethoven stood beside the conductor Michael Umlauf, beating time from his own score. When it ended he could not hear the ovation, until the contralto Caroline Unger turned him round to see it. The premiere is documented; the backstage talk is imagined.
