A Young Man at the Door

A shy twenty-year-old from Hamburg with long blond hair and a voice that hadn't quite settled knocked on Robert and Clara Schumann's door, carrying a letter from the violinist Joachim and a bag of his own piano music. He sat down and played. Robert stopped him after a few bars and ran to fetch Clara. Within weeks Robert told the world that Johannes Brahms was the one they had been waiting for. The words are imagined.
