The Music Hall · 57th Street and Seventh Avenue · New York · 5 May 1891

Opening Night

Andrew Carnegie, the richest man in America, built New York a concert hall. For opening night he brought the most famous composer alive across the Atlantic: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who was nervous, homesick and amazed by everything. Tonight he conducts his own Coronation March under brand-new electric lights. The building will soon take its builder's name. The words are imagined.
