Frédéric Chopin and the novelist George Sand fled Paris for a sunny winter in Mallorca. It rained for weeks. Chopin fell ill, his good Pleyel piano was stuck in customs, and they ended up renting cells in an empty mountain monastery. There he finished his Preludes. Sand later wrote that she came home through a storm and found him at the piano, convinced he had drowned. The words are imagined.
