The Emperor Titus opened Rome's new amphitheatre, which we call the Colosseum, with a hundred days of games. The poet Martial described one famous moment: two gladiators, Priscus and Verus, fought so long and so evenly that the crowd begged for both. Titus gave each the wooden sword of freedom. It's said to be the only time two men were declared winners together. We arrive as they lay down their weapons. The words are imagined.
