Neal's Music Hall · Fishamble Street · Dublin · 13 April 1742

Messiah

Handel's Messiah was first performed in Dublin for charity. To fit 700 people into the hall, ladies were asked to come without hooped skirts and gentlemen without swords. The contralto Susannah Cibber, notorious for a London scandal, sang 'He was despised' so movingly that a clergyman cried out that her sins were forgiven. The premiere is documented; the conversation is imagined.
