The Night Before the March

Tomorrow a quarter of a million people will gather at the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Tonight, in a suite at the Willard Hotel, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is still writing his speech, long past midnight, with his lawyer and adviser Clarence Jones and his aides. He has been told he has only a few minutes at the podium. Tomorrow, part of the way through, he will put the text aside. The words here are imagined.
