The Qilin

In 1414 envoys from the Sultan of Bengal arrived at the Ming court with a gift no one in China had ever seen: a giraffe, brought from East Africa and carried on the great treasure ships. Courtiers declared it a qilin, the gentle mythical beast that appears only when a ruler is wise and the world is at peace. The court painter Shen Du painted it and wrote a poem in its honour. The words are imagined.
