The night before the Ides of March, Julius Caesar dines at the house of his Master of Horse, Marcus Lepidus. Plutarch records that the talk turned to which death is best, and Caesar answered: a sudden one. Among the guests is Decimus Brutus, who is already part of the conspiracy. The rest of the dialogue is imagined.
