The Greasy Grass Camp

The United States had broken the Fort Laramie Treaty to take the Black Hills after gold was found there, and ordered every Lakota and Cheyenne band onto reservations. Thousands refused and gathered with Tatanka Iyotake, Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa holy man. Earlier that month, at a Sun Dance, he had a vision of soldiers falling into camp like grasshoppers from the sky. Tonight the camp stretches for miles along the river: lodges, horse herds, drums. Tomorrow the 7th Cavalry will attack. We stay with the evening before. The words are imagined.
