General Tubman

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in Maryland in 1849, then went back again and again, guiding family and strangers north along the Underground Railroad. After the Fugitive Slave Act, freedom meant Canada, and she rented a house in St. Catharines, Ontario, where many of the people she had rescued lived. In April 1858 the Reverend Jermain Loguen brought a visitor: the abolitionist John Brown, who was looking for allies and recruits. Brown was so impressed he called her 'General Tubman'. We stay with this first meeting, long before Harpers Ferry. The words are imagined.
