Va, pensiero

Two years earlier Giuseppe Verdi had lost his wife and both his children, and his last opera had flopped. He swore he would never compose again. Then the impresario Merelli pushed a libretto into his pocket. At home it fell open at a chorus of Hebrew exiles singing of their lost homeland. Tonight that chorus will be sung at La Scala for the first time. The words are imagined.
